From the moment he was five years old, Ian Derek knew that there was something different about him; something that set him apart from the other boys. His earliest memory was of the day he noticed he was different. It all began on a hot summer day, and little five-year old Ian was sitting on his porch eating his strawberry ice cream. His mother came out of the house and asked Ian if he would like to go with her to visit their new neighbors. As he had nothing to do, Ian happily accepted and soon they were on their way. When they arrived, an old woman in a long light blue dress greeted them. Ian, being naturally shy, hid behind his mother. The old woman smiled said, “So who is the adorable little boy behind you?”

His mother smiled and said, “Oh, he’s my son, Ian. Say hello, Ian.”

Ian cautiously poked his head out and muttered a quick “hello” before he hid behind his mother once more. The two women had only been talking for a few minutes when another woman came outside. She, as Ian learned afterwards, was the old woman’s daughter, Blanca. One look at Blanca and Ian knew he wouldn’t like her. Blanca was a fair skinned blonde beauty with light blue eyes. Many people would say she was attractive, but the haughty manner in which she spoke to him and the disdainful look in her eyes made her anything but attractive to Ian.

Ian, remembering his manners, was civil throughout the whole visit. It was near the end of the conversation when the old woman, Rose, took Ian’s mother around to the other side of the house to show her the flowerbeds. Blanca, taking advantage of the fact that she was alone with Ian, grabbed his shoulder and turned him around to face her.

“Listen here, brat,” she hissed. “I don’t want you and your freaky eyes hanging around my darlings. Got it?”

Ian was terrified. Never had an adult spoken to him like that, not even when they were angry with him. He nodded slowly, and sighed in relief when she let go of her grip on his arm. As soon as she released him he ran around to his mother and stayed by her side for the remainder of the visit.

That night, before he climbed into bed, he grabbed a crate and stood on it to better see his reflection in his mirror. He didn’t get what was so weird about his eyes. He rather liked the way they seemed to change colors depending on his mood; the way they seemed yellowish when he was happy, brown when he was affectionate, indigo when he was content and calm, and red when he was mad or embarrassed.

But as time passed, Ian eventually got over the hurt and fear he felt when Blanca had grabbed his arm and called him a freak. But he was still cautious of hanging around Blanca’s darlings, twins Estella and João, and quadruplets Catalina, Angelique, Miguel, and Damian.

Whenever he saw one of the children near him, he always found a reason to go off in the other direction. Over the years, he did this so many times that it became second nature to him.

The first time he actually met one of them was in his first year of high school. It was a bright sunny morning and Ian was sleepily leaving his home and was on his way to school. He had never liked school too much. Sure, nobody ever made fun of him and he got great grades, but nobody ever got near him or even spoke to him. By now it didn’t faze him. Yeah, the first few years of school were difficult, but he eventually got used to his solitude.

Ian was halfway to his school when he realized that if he didn’t hurry, he was going to be late. Kicking into gear, he sprinted into the school just in time. He leaned on a wall for a few seconds, trying to catch his breath. Slowly, and somewhat painfully, he trudged over to his locker and opened it. Or, at least he tried to. No matter how many times he put in his combination, his locker just wouldn’t open. Ian sighed and leaned his head on his locker.

“Need help?”

Ian turned to see who was speaking to him. The voice belonged to a girl with smooth tan skin with hazel eyes and brown hair, which was hanging loosely around her shoulders. Ian didn’t normally judge people on appearances, but one look at this girl and he knew that she was one of the always-happy-people-who-get-annoying-really-quick.

Ian inwardly rolled his eyes. “Yeah, my lockers stuck.”

The girl nodded and went up to his locker. She stood digging around in her purse and got out a pencil with a bright pink eraser. She took the pencil and gently tapped the edges of the locker. Then, with surprising force, she yanked open the locker.

Ian was astounded. He had never met a girl this strong before. “Uh, thanks.”

“No problem!” the girl cheerfully replied before she skipped down the hall.

Ian shook his head and started shoving things into his backpack. Things were going to be interesting this year.

Two hours later, Ian was sleepily looking out the window, pretending to pay attention to his Algebra teacher and her speech on how things were going to be wonderful this year and how they were going to have so much fun. Ian smirked. ‘Some things never change,’ he thought.

Ian was saved from falling asleep by the bell, telling everybody that class was over and to head over to third period. Ian gathered his notebook and pencils and waited until most of the class was gone to leave. It’s not like his next class was so far away; it was just next-door! Ian didn’t bother lingering in the hallway. The sooner he got to class, the better the chances he could get a seat somewhere nobody could notice him. He walked into the classroom and sat down in a desk near a corner in the back. As he sat down in the chair, he noticed that the teacher looked vaguely familiar. Before he could find out why she looked familiar, she looked up in shock, which she covered up seconds later.

She suddenly asked, “So what’s your name?”

Her voice… Why was it so familiar? “Ian,” he said, “Ian Derek.”

The teacher gasped, “Ian? Why, it is you Ian! I haven’t seen you in such a long time! It’s me, Mrs. Rose!”

Ian looked up in shock. He hadn’t seen Mrs. Rose in ages. After the episode with Blanca, he had never visited the house again.

Ian was jolted out of his thoughts by Mrs. Rose.

“Now Ian, what are you doing back there? Come up into this seat. Much better! Now tell me, dear, how is your mother?”

Ian was bombarded by questions until everybody had entered the class and the late bell rang.

Mrs. Rose stood up and waited until the class had quieted down before she spoke. “Welcome to third period Geography! I know, many of you couldn’t care less about geography because you think it will be useless. Why bother knowing this about all these countries if you have a map? But I will tell you this right now, without geography, you’re nowhere.”

The class stared at Mrs. Rose in awe. They had never seen a teacher talk to her class in such a frank and open manner. And who was that boy that she was talking to? He looked so familiar…

But Mrs. Rose wasn’t finished yet. “So! Why don’t we play a game to get acquainted with one another, even though I’m sure that you all must have met before? Okay, the first person I pick has to tell us something about themselves, such as hobbies, name, age, and any other thing you can think of. Then, the person who goes next has to ask them a question. Now, no rude or inappropriate questions! Ian, why don’t you start?”

Ian stood up and said, “Um, my name is Ian Derek and I’m 15 years old. I’ve always lived here and I enjoy reading and exploring the woods near my house.”

When Ian sat down, he noticed that everybody in the class was staring at him, except for Mrs. Rose.

Rose.

Ian silently groaned. He was never fond of public speaking, and having to be first up there embarrassed him, changing his eye color into a red-brown mix. “My eye color changes on the mood I’m in,” he said. “I pretty much have no control over when it changes, it just does.”

The people in his class weren’t satisfied with that answer. How could somebody’s eyes just change color like that? This kind wasn’t just weird, he was a freak. An incredibly hostile freak.

Ian zoned out during the rest of the introductions. It wasn’t like they were going to talk to him, so why should he bother learning their names? For the rest of class he just stared out the window and daydreamed about being in a place far away.

Ian was startled when the bell rang, but was even more startled when Mrs. Rose asked him to come back at the end of the day to talk to him.

The rest of the day was a kind of haze for him. Every class was the exact same as the first one. The only difference was that he was getting a lot more stares from everybody in the hall. ‘It seems like word has spread,’ he thought bitterly. ‘Can people ever stop talking about things that don’t concern them?’

Soon enough, the final bell rang, releasing all the students for the day. Ian shuffled into Mrs. Rose’s class before he left, remembering that she wanted to speak to him.

“Ah, Ian, come in!” she greeted him warmly. “Just take a seat there. I just wanted to ask you of everything is alright. I noticed that many of the children didn’t seem to recognize you, even though you have been going to school with them ever since you were six.”

Ian looked away and sighed. “I don’t expect them to recognize me. When I first started going to school they ignored me, so eventually they just forgot I existed.”

“Is it because of your eyes?”

Ian winced. This was the question he wanted to avoid. “Yep, it scared them out to see my eyes change color. They said it was unnatural and that I was cursed or something.”

Mrs. Rose sighed. “Children these days… Will they ever learn? Ian, don’t take them too seriously. It’s human nature to be afraid of what’s different. Okay, you can go now. And Ian,” she added wile he was heading out the door “pay attention in class next time. I don’t want to see you daydreaming all class again, okay?”

Ian smiled and nodded. Now the halls were clean of any student there. ‘It’s so quiet,’ he thought. ‘I have never seen the halls so quiet before!’
Ian made a pit stop at his locker to get all the books he needed before he headed out. He walked down the path to his home, not even bothering to lift his head up and see were he was going as the path was so familiar to him. He was about halfway home before he noticed a girl was walking in front of him.

Instinctively, he pulled back, knowing that the only other person who would be walking down that path would have to be one of Blanca’s darlings. ‘I wonder who it is,’ Ian thought, not really caring.

Ian had only been following the girl for a few minutes before she suddenly tripped over a half hidden rock and fell. Forgetting Blanca’s warning, Ian dropped his backpack and rushed over to help the girl up.
